Mr Simon Fulford FRCS(urol)
I have been a Consultant Urologist at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and Darlington Memorial Hospital, Darlington since 2001. I am Consultant Urologist to the Golden Jubilee Spinal cord Injury Centre at James cook University Hospital.
I trained in medicine at Kings College Hospital, University of London and qualified MBBS in 1987. I trained in General Surgery in London and Reading gaining my FRCS in 1992. I undertook Urological training in Reading, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Cardiff, Leicester, Derby and Nottingham. I passed the speciality exam FRCS(urol) in 1999 and completed my training gaining my CCST in Urology in 2001. I did a fellowship in Spinal Injuries and Neuro Urology at Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Unit Northern General Hospital, Sheffield.
My primary interest within Urology is the care of the neuropathic bladder in patients with spinal cord injuries or neurological disease. I also have a major interest in the investigation and management of lower urinary tract symptoms and incontinence including post prostatectomy incontinence in men and incontinence, recurrent urinary infections and urethral diverticulae in women and bladder pain syndromes in both men and women. I am a member of several MDTs including the Pelvic Floor MDT, the Uro Oncology MDT, the Endometriosis MDT, the gynaecology oncology MDT and the Colorectal Oncology MDT. I regularly undertake radical cystectomy with either ileal conduit or orthotopic bladder formation for bladder cancer, pelvic exenteration for gynaecological or colorectal cancer and bladder and ureteric reconstruction following surgery for endometriosis and other pathologies. I also maintain a busy general Urology practice both in the NHS and in private practice.
I have introduced several new techniques and procedures since appointment and have run prospective audits of these procedures. These have been presented at local, national and international meetings and in some cases published.
Medico legal work
I have been preparing expert reports since 2001 and I have attended training courses in medico legal report writing and courtroom skills. I have appeared in court as an expert witness. I currently receive instructions in approximately four or five cases per month. I have prepared reports for both the claimant and the defendant and received joint instructions. The cases I have reported on include compensation claims following spinal injury, pelvic fracture or head injury, medical negligence cases and criminal injury cases.
I am a member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons and it’s sections of Female, Functional and Urodynamic Urology and Uro Oncology. I am also a member of the United Kingdom Continence Society, The international Continence Society and the British Association of Spinal Cord Injury Specialists.
